The Pecking Order Comes to the AFL
Claude Schefter's Tuesday-morning column now runs in the AFL too β all 24 franchises ranked 1 through 24, with trend arrows, five weekly awards, and a conference-by-conference standings snapshot. Half your all-play record, half your last three weeks, and not one ounce of credit for the schedule doing you a favor.
The Full Story
TheLeague has spent a season being told, every Tuesday morning, exactly where it stands. The AFL has spent that same season with 24 teams, two conferences, four divisions and no single page willing to say which of them is actually any good. That page exists now.
The math is the same argument it is on the other side of the site, and it is deliberately a short one. Half of your score is your all-play record β if you had played every team every week, how often would you have won? The other half is your last three weeks of scoring. Both halves are scaled against the field before they are added, so fifty-fifty means fifty-fifty. Your head-to-head record does not vote. That is the entire point: the column exists to look past the thing the standings already tell you.
In a 24-team league that distinction has teeth. Look at the Week 14 issue and Balls Deep sit second on a .638 all-play while riding a four-game losing streak, and Vitside Mafia jumped three spots on a 3-1 stretch that the standings barely register. Both of those are the formula arguing with the record, out loud, in public.
Underneath the rankings: Stat of the Week, Bench Blunder of the Week (the AFL leaves a genuinely upsetting number of points on the bench), Heater, Cooler, and next week's Matchup of the Week, picked as the highest-ranked clash on the slate. Then a standings snapshot split the way the AFL actually thinks β American League North and South, National League East and West β with the full 24-team all-play table beside it.
One AFL-specific wrinkle worth knowing: the league plays double-header weeks, and the column counts them honestly. The record beside each team covers the last three weeks it played, not the last three games, so a doubleheader shows up as "3-1 over their last 4" instead of quietly dropping a game on the floor.
Two issues are up now β 2025 Weeks 13 and 14 β so you can see the trend arrows working. From kickoff, a fresh one lands every Tuesday morning, and Schefter announces it in the chat with the top of the order and the week's worst bench decision.
