Twenty-Two Seasons of Extremes, Finally Countable

The AFL Record Book is live β€” highest scores, biggest blowouts, closest finishes, longest streaks and the most-played rivalries, drawn from all 5,333 games the league has ever played.

The Full Story

Here is a thing that was quietly impossible until this week: naming the biggest blowout in AFL history. MFL's archives had handed back 2007 through 2019 with the regular-season matchups stripped out, so any all-time list you built stopped being about the league and started being about whichever years happened to survive. Those seasons have now been pulled back in and checked against the official standings, and the Record Book is what you do with them.

It answers the questions that come up in the chat every year. The biggest blowout ever is Your Team Sucks over Joey's Team by 136.16 β€” in 2004, a season that was almost entirely invisible on this site until now. The closest finish is one hundredth of a point: The Mariachi Ninjas 110.77, The Boondock Saints 110.76, week 9 of 2015. The highest single game belongs to Drunk Indians, 231.72 in 2021. The longest winning streak is 16 straight by Whitman's Wonders, running from week 11 of 2011 into week 4 of 2012, and the longest losing streak is 16 as well, by Badd Boys, which took them from week 5 of 2015 to week 2 of 2016.

There are ten boards in total: highest single game, biggest blowout, closest finish, highest combined score, longest winning and losing streaks, most-played and most lopsided rivalries, best regular season and most points in a season. Every rivalry and every game links straight through to the pairing page, so you can go from "we got destroyed once" to the full series in one tap.

Two deliberate choices worth knowing about. Franchises appear under the name they carried that season β€” Cliffside Killer Clowns, Dicks out for Harambe, Taco Hell β€” because a record book that renames history is a worse record book. And forfeits are excluded: a 0.00 is not a performance, and letting them in would have handed "biggest blowout" to games nobody played.

One permanent hole, printed on the page rather than hidden: the AFL played its 2003 season on Yahoo and only the standings were ever typed into MFL. No game from that year has a score anywhere, so nothing from it can appear. Every season from 2004 on is complete.
