One Hero, Every Day of the Season
The AFL homepage hero now wears the same branded look year-round β keeper crunch, draft weekend, live Sunday slates, waiver night, the offseason lull. One card, a rotating cast of players, and a gold border that means business.
The Full Story
The AFL homepage used to run two different heroes depending on the day. Calendar moments β the keeper deadline, conference drafts, the trade deadline β got the branded deep-navy card with the player cut-out and the countdown. But the rest of the year, the in-season Tuesday recap, the Wednesday waiver reminder, a fresh feature drop, the quiet stretch of the offseason, fell back to a plain editorial banner that looked like it belonged to a different site. Two visual languages on the same page, switching based on the calendar, and nobody could tell you why.
Now it's one hero, all year. Every state β live scoring during the Sunday slate, the Monday standings check, the Tuesday recap, Wednesday waiver night, game-day lineup lock, the offseason holding pattern β renders through the same branded card, written in Claude Schefter's voice. 'GAMES ARE LIVE.' on Sundays. 'CLAIMS RUN TONIGHT.' on Wednesdays. 'THE RACE TIGHTENS.' on Mondays. Each one pulls a random player from a pool of 21 optimized cut-outs, so the hero never looks the same two days running.
The one thing that changes: the gold border is now a signal, not decoration. It only appears on calendar-anchored events β the deadline you can't miss, the draft that's about to start, the championship on the line. Ambient states (the recap, the offseason, a feature announcement) wear the same card without the frame. Border means 'there's a clock on this.' No border means 'here's what's happening.' Same identity, two registers, every day of the year.
