The Schedule Is Graded Now, Not Just Explained
The scheduling rules are goals now β ranked, and scored against the season they actually produced. Every release page shows how that year did on each one, because the NFL moves the bye calendar and the same goal is easy one year and impossible the next. Plus a new goal for 2027.
The Full Story
A list of rules with no outcomes is a list of promises, and this one kept looking like a schedule breaking them. It is not. The league does not control the NFLβs bye calendar, so the same goal is trivial one year and unreachable the next β and a page that never says which is which reads as an accusation.
So they are goals, they are ranked, and every season is graded on the schedule release page against the ones that were in force when it was drawn. Each goal now carries a verdict: MET, AS FAR AS THE CALENDAR ALLOWED, NOT ACHIEVABLE THIS YEAR, or OPTIMISED for the soft ones where inventing a pass mark would be less honest than showing the number. The AFLβs 2026 schedule scores eight met and two optimised. The Leagueβs scores six met, two partial, two optimised β and the two partials are things the calendar decided, not things anyone got wrong.
Top of the list, and it is not close: no doubleheader lands on an NFL bye week. A doubleheader pays the bye penalty twice. In a year when no league-wide week works, the commissioner has staggered doubleheaders franchise by franchise so each team plays its two games in a week its own roster is whole β a last resort, built by hand, and still better than the alternative. Next is getting division games off bye weeks, which the AFL cannot fully do and The League can only do by giving up its all-division finish.
New for 2027, and written into the constitution already: the division games that cannot dodge a bye week take the LIGHTEST bye weeks β ideally ones with only two NFL teams out instead of six. Replayed over the last five seasons it improves three of them, 2024 by more than half.
The 2026 schedules are not re-drawn β they are locked and being played. They are graded against the ten goals that existed when they were made, and the new one is listed separately as adopted afterwards. Every goal is the same in both leagues; only the outcomes differ.
