Twenty-Four Teams. One Ballot. Your Call.

The Owners' Poll comes to the AFL. Every Tuesday The Pecking Order ranks all 24 by the numbers; now you rank your top 10 β€” your own team included, if you think you belong there β€” and the room's answer runs in Thursday's column right beside the machine's.

The Full Story

For a year now, The Pecking Order has told you every Tuesday who the best team in this league is, and every Tuesday somebody in the chat has explained why it's wrong. Fine. Put it on the record. The Owners' Poll opens with the column each Tuesday and closes Thursday at the week's first kickoff, and what comes out of it publishes in that same issue, next to the algorithm, so the week's real story becomes the room versus the machine.

Rank your top 10. Not seven β€” this is a 24-team league, and ten is what it takes to actually say something about a field this size. Your own team is on the ballot like everybody else's; nobody is stopping you from putting Smokane first, and the Homer Index is going to notice if you do. Tap the teams in the order you rate them, shuffle them until it's right, and change your mind as often as you like until the ballot shuts.

One ballot, both conferences. The AL doesn't get its own poll and neither does the NL. The column already ranks all 24 in one list, and half the fun of this league is arguing whether an American League team that beats up on the American League would survive a month in the National. Now there's a table where that argument settles.

You'll find the ballot on your lineup page too, sitting at the top of the one page everybody in this league visits anyway β€” same trip, same deadline, no second errand. Twelve of the 24 have to vote or the column runs the machine's numbers alone and says so, which would be a bleak look for a league that argues this much.

Ballots stay sealed until the poll closes, then every one of them publishes. There is a voters page keeping the receipts β€” who voted, how often, and how well they actually read the league, because every ballot gets scored against how the next week plays out. Being loudly wrong in Week 2 is now a thing that follows you to Week 15. Want a nudge when the ballot opens or a warning before it shuts? Notifications has both, and they're yours to switch on.
