The Hardware Went Home With The Owners

AFL owner pages now wear the league's actual trophies β€” AFL Champion, the AL and NL crowns, every division badge, the NIT, Premier League and D-League β€” and for the first time that includes the titles won by owners who left before 2016, which the record had been quietly filing under nobody.

The Full Story

The AFL has handed out 192 pieces of hardware since 2003, and until this week 59 of them were sitting in a drawer marked defunct. The trophy case on every franchise page is scoped to the current owner, which is correct β€” the Muck Juggling Micks did not win Delirium Tremens' 2011 title β€” but it meant that once an owner left, their championship left with them. Way More Funner's 2007 NL East. No Frills' 2008 championship. Brady's Bastards in 2009. Real seasons, real banners, no page.

Now every owner page carries the league's own award badges, in the same art the franchise trophy rooms use, next to the record and the season table. Current owners get the full set at a glance; former owners get theirs back. Jim Shea's page finally says what a dozen seasons of Delirium Tremens earned: one AFL Championship, three NL titles, three division badges. The Record Book is unchanged, and so are the franchise pages β€” nothing moved, it just finally got delivered.

The trick was one missing number. Before 2016 the AFL was rebuilt as a fresh MFL league every season, so a team's slot number meant nothing from year to year and the award ledger only recorded who to credit today. Every award now also records the slot that actually won it that season, which is enough to place it on whoever held that slot that year β€” no guessing, no renaming history.
