Vote: Defensive Scoring tweak

Postby braven112 on Wed Dec 09, 2009 12:22 am

Here is the original post again to review, basically the idea is to move away from tiers for points against and into the same format as we use for yards at other positions. What I did here was follow the same tier format and turned it into a sliding scale so it would keep the balance as we have now, there would be a small increase for the better defenses and a small decrease for the bad defenses. The general idea here is that each point given up during a game counts basically the same.

I realize that there are certain numbers that are impossible to hit, 1point against for example, but to make it easier I'm showing each point, its a little hard to show a spreadsheet on the forum here but each number below is in increments of one point, 15 points is for a shutout and 12.5 would be for 3 points allowed:

15.00 0 Points Allowed
14.17
13.33
12.50 3 Points Allowed
11.67
10.83
10.00 6 Points Allowed
9.43
8.86
8.29
7.72 10 Points Allowed
7.15
6.58
6.00
5.29
4.57 15 Points Allowed
3.86
3.14
2.43
1.71
1.00 20 Points Allowed
0.63
0.25
-0.13
-0.50
-0.88 25 Points Allowed
-1.25
-1.63
-2.00
-2.57
-3.14 30 Points Allowed
-3.71
-4.29
-4.86
-5.43
-6.00 35 Points Allowed
-6.01 36 Points Allowed (-0.01 for every point allowed after this)

-6.38 73 Points Allowed (This is the NFL record for most points scored in a game and since we use offensive points against the actual number of offensive points allowed in this game was probably even less)

I like the idea of making the defensive scoring be based on a certain # of points per point given up. The thing I don't like about the plan laid out here is that it varies that point amount.

Couldn't we just say something like:

0-999 points allowed = 15 points
1- 35 points allowed = -0.6 points per point allowed
(this results in -6 at 35 points allowed)
36-999 points allowed = -0.01 points per point allowed

So, at 36 points, you'd be at -6.01, etc

I think it's the same concept as yours, but without varying degrees of point decreases

I like the idea as well, it takes the above concept a step further and makes it even more straightforward in that each point is worth the same. I would like to see what it looks like on a spreadsheet at some of the current benchmarks. If others like this idea better we can hold another vote at the conclusion of this vote. Even if it passes we can still change it again if everyone wants.

Looks like I can't upload a xls file here. I'll email it to you to take a look at (and post if you like)
